COVID Drives New Careers in Information Technology

Blog

Among the many changes spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic is the adoption of digital technologies in the workplace, classroom and even in everyone’s personal life to ensure that productivity and connectivity remain intact while in-person meetings and gatherings have been discouraged. And with the adoption of more digital technologies comes the need for professionals to support such programs and also address any threats that have the potential to arise. Unsurprisingly, many of the new positions that are now in demand are in information technology, or IT. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the top emerging careers in the field.

Top New Careers in IT

Not only are various IT careers now in demand, but many are also very lucrative. They’re available throughout a variety of markets and sectors, from private organizations to government ones. Here’s a look at some of them:

Cybersecurity Services

Cybersecurity is arguably more important now than it ever has been, as professionals are needed to safeguard the systems and platforms that people are using in academic and professional environments. Cybersecurity, or information security, analysts typically work as consultants to an organization, tasked with protecting its networks and systems. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook is increasing at a 31 percent clip, with more than 40,000 jobs expected to be added in the field by the year 2029. The median salary for a professional in this role is nearly $100,000 per year.

Mobile App Developer

Even before the pandemic hit, organizations have increasingly hired or consulted with mobile developers to work on their websites and other platforms. This too is a profession that’s increasing at a faster than average clip, with up to 14,000 new jobs expected to be added by the year 2029, according to data from the BLS. This growth is driven by the increased use of mobile apps, mobile devices and online services. Per the BLS, the average salary for a mobile app or web developer is nearly $74,000 per year.

Computer Systems Analyst

In addition to the adoption of more digital platforms, increasing efficiency is also a top priority for many organizations. Time is money, and ensuring that the right programs are in place to streamline this efficiency is becoming all the more important as the adoption of digital platforms and technologies continues. That’s the key duty of a computer systems analyst: to uncover solutions that are as effective as they are efficient for an organization. As is the case with most IT professions, this career path is growing and expected to add more than 46,500 new jobs in the field by the year 2029. Per the BLS, the average annual salary for a computer systems analyst is $90,920 per year.

Information Systems Management

We’ll round this list out with the position of an information systems manager, a profession that is expected to add more than 48,000 jobs by 2020, according to data from the BLS. These professionals are tasked with planning, coordinating and directing all computer-related and digital activities within an organization. They often work hand-in-hand with a firm’s leadership to identify and recommend platform upgrades, help keep an organization’s network secure, direct other IT professionals within a firm, and set short and long-term goals. Information systems managers are often the top IT role within an organization. On average, these professionals earn nearly $150,000 per year.
